Frank Vertullo - President & Technical Director

Frank Vertullo, a former National Coach of the Year and an NJCAA National Champion head coach, was named the head coach of the Queens College men's soccer team in 2017. In 7 seasons at Queens, Vertullo is the All-Time winningest coach in program history has guided the Knights to an overall record of 68-45-12 (.592 %) with 4 ECC postseason appearances, two NCAA Tournament appearances, and winning the program’s first-ever East Coast Conference Championship in 2023.

Frank Vertullo, a former National Coach of the Year and an NJCAA National Champion head coach, was named the head coach of the Queens College men’s soccer team in 2017.

Vertullo joined Queens after spending 10 seasons as head coach at Suffolk Community College, where he led the Sharks to their first 2 NJCAA National Championships in school history.

Over Vertullo’s 10 seasons at the helm, Suffolk owned one of the best records for junior colleges in the country at 161-24-13 overall (.846%). 

Vertullo, who took over the Suffolk program in 2007, guided the Sharks to national titles in 2010 and 2014. Suffolk also reached the national quarterfinals in 2008, the national semifinals in 2012 and the national finals in 2013. 

Vertullo was named NSCAA Coach of the Year in 2010 after the Sharks’ first national title. He also earned Coach of the Tournament accolades twice (2010 and 2014) and NJCAA Region XV Coach of the Year five times (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016). Under Vertullo’s watch, Suffolk won five regional championships (2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014), and the Sharks were regional finalists four times (2007, 2009, 2015, 2016).

Two of Vertullo’s players at Suffolk earned NSCAA National Player of the Year honors (Zacchious Ogoo, 2010; Joseph Lopez, 2014). He mentored 13 NJCAA All-Americans and nine NSCAA All-Americans. Additionally, Vertullo coached two NJCAA Region XV Player of the Year honorees, one Academic All-American (Eddie Hackett, 2010) and 60 NJCAA All-Region players.

Prior to Suffolk, Vertullo served as assistant coach at his alma mater, Dowling College, from 2001-2006. In those six seasons, Dowling went 93-12-20 overall (.824%), reached the NCAA Division II National Semifinals four times (2001, 2003, 2004, 2006) and won the school’s first men’s soccer National Championship in 2006. East Coast Conference (ECC) Hall of Famer Morten Jensen was named NSCAA National Player of the Year in 2006, and forward Guy Kpene was drafted by DC United of Major League Soccer (MLS).

A three-year captain and four-year starter as a student-athlete at Dowling, Vertullo started in all 73 contests and helped the Golden Lions go 52-18-3 during his four seasons. He was a three-time all-conference selection and was NYCAC Newcomer of the Year in 1997. Dowling made three NCAA Tournament appearances (1997, 1998, 2000) and captured two conference championships (1997, 1998).

After his playing days at Dowling, Vertullo played professionally for the New York Freedoms, where he was a two-year starter at center back. The Freedoms reached the third round of the US Open Cup in 2004 and played a friendly versus Juventus of the Italian Serie A. The Freedoms also made two USL playoff appearances.

Vertullo graduated from Dowling College in 2001 with a degree in business. He completed his master’s degree in education at Dowling in 2004. Vertullo is a teacher of 21 years.

Vincent Companion - Girls Director

Former Queens College men’s soccer student-athlete and Alum ‘19 Vincent Companion has spent 5 season as part of the Queens College coaching staff. In 5 seasons Companion has helped the Knights record 51 wins with back-to-back East Coast Conference playoff appearances and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

The 2022 season was the Knights’ best season in program history as Queens recorded a program-best 13-7 record while earning the #2 seed in the ECC Playoffs (highest in program history) before the program earned their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament as the #7 seed.

 

In 2023 the Knights would record back-to-back double-digit winning seasons while winning the ECC Championship for the first time in program history before winning their first NCAA Tournament game as the #10 seed against Notre Dame (OH).

 

Companion played for the Knights from 2015 to 2018, starting a total of 41 games in defense. He helped contribute to a stellar Knights defense during his senior year which saw the Knights post one of their best season with a 10-4-3 overall record, and 6-2-1 in East Coast Conference play.  

 

A member of the South Shore Futbol Club coaching staff in Suffolk county, Companion helped coached a 2004 boys team that went on to win the regional and state and regional championship en route to taking the national stage against the best 16 teams in the country. 

 

Companion graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 2019 and is currently a Physical Education teacher in Suffolk County.

Dave Ramirez - Boys Director

Ramirez played under coach Vertullo for two seasons in 2017 and 2018 that saw him make a combined 22 starts. A key figure on the back line during the Knights return to postseason play in 2018 which saw the Knights shutout five opponents en route to a 10-4-3 record. For his strong play during his senior campaign Ramirez was named to the All-ECC third team for the 2018 season. 

 

Ramirez currently is the head coach for NY Braveheart SC, recently capturing the clubs 1st ever UPSL American Conference Premier Championship in 2025. 

He currently is president and owner of BALR Academy, a high level training service for individual players and group trainings. 

Ramirez also worked as a fitness performance coach for Queensboro Football Club wheere he was in charge of game preparations, physical fitness, strength & conditioning, and field coaching. 

 

Ramirez graduated from Queens College in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He is a certified New York State Physical Education teacher for the DOE and is working on a Masters Degree in K-12 Health Education.

Giovanni Cruz - Gk Director & Admin

QC Alum and former All-ECC honoree goalkeeper Dario Cruz has spent 2 seasons as the goalkeeper coach at Queens College. Cruz the all-time career leader in wins, saves, and shutouts is tasked with working with the Knights goalkeepers.

In his first season as the goalkeeper coach in 2023, Cruz mentored four goalkeepers as the team recorded five shutouts, and recorded 12 wins which included winning four postseason games, including the program’s first-ever ECC Championship and NCAA Tournament victory. 

In his second season, he mentored Thanasis Shehadeh to ECC Goalie of the Year.  

Giovanni also works for the DV7 academy and Met Oval.  Off the field Cruz works for Diaza Football Clothing Brand.
